What Is the \$1,702 Stimulus Payment?
The \$1,702 payment remains another step in the government initiative to extend financial relief needed by low- and middle-income Americans. It follows prior stimulus checks but is aimed at a more specific group of people who meet some income- and benefit-related criteria. This time, unlike previous universal payments during the pandemic, it is more targeted, so those who need it most actually get help.
Who is eligible?
Only persons meeting one or more of the criteria below may obtain a cash purchase one-time payment of $1,702, issued in August 2025:
1. Social Security Recipients:
- Persons who, in June 2025, might also have qualified if they received Social Security retirement benefits and/or SSI and/or SSDI.
- All beneficiaries would have to have received benefits for at least 12 continuous months during the past year.
2. For Low-Income Families:
- An individual who earns less than $75,000 per annum may qualify, or in cases where both persons earn income on the marriage, the combined income should not be more than $150,000.
- AGI should be from the latest tax return filing (2023 or 2024).
3. Veterans and Disability Beneficiaries:
- Qualifying veterans in receipt of VA disability or pension compensation might be able to qualify.
4. Unemployed or Underemployed Workers:
- These are persons who for more than 12 weeks have been out of unemployment benefits or are working part-time with a weekly income under a certain threshold.
5. Families with Dependents:
- Parents of one or more qualifying children under the age of 17 may be entitled to an additional cash grant.
When Will Payments Be Made?
- Payment by direct deposit is expected beginning August 15, 2025.
- Paper checks will be mailed in phases and take about 7-10 days longer.
- Social Security or SSI beneficiaries will generally receive payments by their usual payment method.
How Will You Receive the Payment?
- Social Security, VA, or SSI beneficiaries will receive payments by direct deposit, Direct Express card, or paper check, depending on how they usually receive their regular benefits.
- Other eligible citizens will receive their stimulus payments either through information from their IRS accounts or through the data from their tax returns.
