Before getting into the Uspend deadlines, let’s just recap what is being altered in the SASSA system: April saw the onset of delivery delays of social pension/grant monies due to the ongoing interdict on SARS funds payment to SASSA. In time for the July, August, and even September 2025 grants delivery, another administration on interdicting SASSA received an initiative from the government to allocate a Double Payment to all beneficiaries who received multiple grants.
What Is the Double Grant Payment?
On the 12th of August 2025, SASSA will disburse two grants, almost at the same time, to the said beneficiaries who are eligible for multiple categories, such as Older Persons and Child Support Grants or Disability and Foster Child Grants. It is a combination of the late July payments and early August payments to make it easier for financing. The Sr. may also be given a double payment with other grants to give a huge boost to such multi-generational families.
For instance, when a senior is getting R2 180 pension with R560 Child Support Grant, there is a chance the double payment will deposit R2740.
Why the Initiative Is Important
At 5.2% in 2025, inflation weighs on the prices of essentials such as food (6.1%) for vulnerable persons. This double payment takes care of all July payment delays and makes crowding at pay points less awful. By consolidating the payments in this manner, SASSA also develops the effectiveness of payment processes in terms of recipients actually getting paid faster. This one-off measure therefore supports financial planning, especially for families trying to juggle responsibilities in economic hard times.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a double payment, the beneficiary must:
- Be in receipt of multiple grants, such as Older Persons and SRD, or Disability and Child Support.
- Have a valid 13-digit South African ID or refugee permit verified by the Department of Home Affairs.
- Have bank details updated and with SASSA.
- Ensure that the bank account registered with SASSA is active, because dormant accounts that have not been active for 90 days or more will be suspended after 15 August 2025.
Said to be eligible are some 3.9 million elderly persons and 8.2 million SRD recipients, among others, as per July 2025 numbers.
How to Access Your Payment
Grants will be deposited to registered bank accounts, SASSA Gold Cards, or could be made available for cash pickups from retailers such as Pick n Pay or Shoprite. Beneficiaries must:
- Verify Details: Update banking and contact details on sassa.gov.za or at a SASSA office before August 10, or payment might be delayed.
- Check Status: Find out about payment dates on the SRD portal (srd.sassa.gov.za), WhatsApp (082 046 8553), or USSD (1347737#).
- Avoid Crowds: Funds will be there until withdrawn; thus, make a withdrawal at a convenient time to reduce chances of theft at ATMs or pay points.SASSA discourages sharing of PINs and OTPs.
Addressing Potential Issues
Payments could be delayed because of outdated details or verification problems. If flagged for verification, become present in a SASSA office with your identity document and bank statement.
