SASSA Grants At Risk: Payments Stopped After August 15 For Earnings Over R8,070

SASSA Income Limit R8070 : Many South Africans rely on SASSA grants for essential living expenses, while an update of concern threatens those who receive them. As from 15 August 2025, the grant payments for those earning more than R8,070 per month could be considerably diminished or just totally canceled. This is to better focus the distribution of these grants on needy people, but this requires many recipients to re-examine their eligibility before the cutoff.

Who Is Going To Be Affected By The Change?

The income threshold applies to various SASSA grants such as the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, and War Veterans Grant. If the gross monthly income of a recipient exceeds R8,070, SASSA would consider that recipient no longer financially eligible for assistance. Salaries, pensions, rents, and any other income are taken into consideration.

For joint applications (married couples), combined household income will be checked and increased accordingly. Recipients are being urged to check their SASSA status online or at a local SASSA office before the new rules take effect in order to be certain whether they still qualify.

How To Check And Update Your Status

SASSA urges recipients to immediately update their income details after any changes in their financial status. It can be checked through SASSA’s official website, through the Moya app, or by visiting a SASSA office. Keeping status confirmation until 15 August  could minimize any delays or interruptions to your payment in the coming cycle.

Recipients are also encouraged to keep all possible proof of income for verification purposes: for example, payslips and bank statements. If one fails to comply with the update-order, SASSA may withhold the grant until eligibility is confirmed.

Why This Update Matters Now

The update to the income-rule comes at a time when the cost of living in South Africa is at an all-time high. Although the adjustment may make the grant system fairer and more sustainable, it may leave certain recipients without the much-needed financial support.

If you depend on your SASSA grant, be sure to act before 15 August 2025 to keep yourself in the payment system. This is not just a bureaucratic formality-it’s about keeping that monthly support that enables you to buy basic necessities like food, electricity, and healthcare.
