Deadline Alert: Convert Your Prepaid Electricity Meter By September 1 Or Lose Power

Prepaid Meter Upgrade 2025 : In 2025, South African households on prepaid meters face a deadline of continental proportions. Thousands of existing allowable meters may cease functioning after September 1, 2025, save the token holders from loading electricity tokens.

Why So Much Rush?

Eskom and municipalities across the country are rolling out the Token Identifier (TID) system upgrade, which requires all prepaid meters to be upgraded. If your meter is not converted before the deadline, you could lose access to electricity, even if you still have units purchased in advance.

The new system seeks to modernize the processing of electricity tokens and improve security. However, if you cannot make arrangements in time to meet this deadline, the almost immediate consequence will be the darkening of your household.

What Happens If You Don’t Convert?

What happens in case you don’t update your prepaid meter in time?

  • Tokens bought after 1st September will not enter into your meter.
  • Besides, any unused tokens you may already have purchased may become invalid.
  • Or you may be forced to wait for a technician to restore your electricity supply.

Hence Eskom is urging residents to act immediately, instead of waiting until the last minute when queues and service delays are guaranteed.

How Is Your Prepaid Meter Converted?

The process is the easy part. And in most cases, a technician is not needed:

  • Contact your electricity distributor or look at your latest electricity slip for instructions.
  • You will be given two key change tokens to enter into your meter.
  • Once these have been entered, the prepaid meter is successfully upgraded and ready for future tokens.

Some areas take care of the conversion automatically; in others, residents have to request assistance. In case you are unsure, best contact your municipality immediately or Eskom customer care.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

With the deadline cracking less than a month away, thousands of families rush to convert. Eskom has issued a warning of possible bottlenecks in service if one waited till the final hour, thereby making it harder to process all applications in time. For people and businesses alike, uninterrupted electricity is no less than a necessity. Converting prepaid meters today ensures that you don’t get power cut when the deadline hits.
