The shadow of hunger has been cast on many millions grappling with addition to economic woes such as increasing food prices and 32.9% unemployment. For these emergency-helping populations, SASSA has announced the beneficiary list for the grant amount of R3,070 for the month of September 2025. Here is a full guide on the eligibility criteria, payment days, and how to check your status in respect to this special disbursement.
What Is the R3,070 Grant?
The R3,070 grant is a one-off payment under SASSA’s Social Relief of Distress (SRD) program, unlike the common R370 SRD grant. It is a grant for people in deep financial crisis who are, for instance, combining a number of grants or who are backlogged on theirs for some of this or that reason, such as the aged, caregivers, or the disabled. These address immediate needs, be it food or medical expenses, for households where 55.5% of the people live below the poverty line.
Eligibility Criteria
Requirements for consideration:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee between the ages of 18 and 59.
- Have no income exceeding R624 per month, with proof obtained from the SARS database and Home Affairs.
- Not receive other SASSA grants other than Child Support or Foster Care grants, nor receive UIF or NSFAS benefits.
- Hold a smart ID and have a phone number registered to his or her name; if already receiving the R370 SRD Grant, the applicant may be eligible for the top-up if they meet the distress criteria.
September 2025 Payment Schedule
Payments begin on 15 September 2025, on the following specific dates:
- Bank accounts: Deposits from 15 September.
- SASSA card withdrawals: Withdrawals from 17 September.
- Post Office/Retail Collections: Collections start from 18 September. The staggered schedule reduces congestion at pay points, and beneficiaries should confirm with their pay points whether they will be paid via bank, SASSA Black Card, or Post Office so they do not get delays for picking up payment.
How to Check Your Status
To verify inclusion in the list of beneficiaries of a R3,070 grant:
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and enter the ID and phone number.
- Type a message to WhatsApp (082 046 8553) that says “Status” and your details.
- Dial the USSD code (*134*7737#) or call the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11. If it says “Declined” or “Pending,” appeal within 30 days or update some of your details (such as banking details) via SRD.
Avoiding Delays and Scams
Ensure that your bank details, ID number, and registered mobile phone number are up to date to avoid rejections. Over 12,000 withdrawals were suspended in August 2025 due to verifications not being done on time. Stick to official SASSA channels to steer clear from scammers promising “double payments.”
