SASSA Issues Urgent Alert: Stop Unlawful Deductions From Your Social Grant Now

SASSA Grant Unlawful Deduction 2025 : The Social Security Agency in South Africa is alerting all those who receive social assistance against unlawful deductions being made by certain bodies on their monthly payouts. Several beneficiaries allege that their required monies have been taken for funeral or insurance policies they had not agreed to, leaving them with hardly any funds.

The Problem At Hand

The deductions, says SASSA, are not authorized by the agency and usually involve firms using the beneficiaries’ information without due permission. Some beneficiaries are under a false impression that SASSA is collaborating with these providers; this in fact is not true. The agency has no funeral or insurance company partnerships and cannot effect money deductions without the express consent of a beneficiary.

What Beneficiaries Should Do

SASSA urges beneficiaries to act on deductions that should not be taking place:

  • If you suspected that deductions are taking their course, head to your nearest SASSA office to report the matter.
  • Send an SMS containing your ID number and the company’s name to 34548.
  • Call the insurer directly to request cancellation of the policy.

SASSA cautions that beneficiaries keep reviewing their payment statements every month to check for any suspicious activity before it gets out of hand.

The Rules Around Deductions

The law stipulates that deductions for funeral policies must abide by certain rules: only one deduction is allowed per month; the funeral policy must be from a registered insurer; and the deduction cannot exceed 10% of the grant amount. Written or electronic consent from the beneficiary must accompany the consent.

However, the following grants do not allow any deductions:

  • Child Support Grant.
  • Care Dependency Grant.
  • Foster Child Grant.
  • Temporary Disability Grant.

Why This Warning Matters

There are social grants for millions of South Africans, including pensioners, the disabled, and families with children, which truly serve as life support. Even the smallest unauthorized deduction means less money to buy food, pay for transport, or settle electricity bills.

Illegal deductions diminish the money of this poor citizen and destroy the trust he has in the system. By raising their voice or shouting aloud, beneficiaries whenever possible will save their income and ensure hires and grants are standing for something that truly matters the needs of themselves and their families.
