R12,500 Youth Support Grant Opens August 15, Apply Now If You Are Unemployed

R12,500 Youth Grant 2025 : In a major boost for young South Africans struggling to find work, the government officially announced that the application for the Youth Support Grant of R12,500 would open on 15 August 2025. This is aimed at ensuring that some financial relief is available and some empowerment is given to those who are unemployed and between 18 and 35 years of age.

A Lifeline For Job Seekers

The grant of R12,500 was meant to cover job-seekers’ essentials such as transport, training, and basic living expenses. Authorities state this will be a one-time payment granted to those applicants who qualify under certain eligibility criteria.

“This program is about giving our youth the resources to actively pursue opportunities,” Minister Thandiwe Nkosi said. “We know that unemployment is a serious challenge, and this grant can help bridge the gap for young people who are ready to work but lack the means.”

Who Can Apply?

In order to be eligible, applicants must satisfy the following criteria stated by the Department of Social Development:

  • Must be South African; must be between 18 and 35 years
  • Cannot be working, and on a job search
  • Cannot be receiving any other social grants from the government
  • Should not have a household income beyond the qualifying threshold

Applicants must present a valid South African ID, proof of residence, and a signed declaration for employment status confirmation.

When To Apply

The application process will commence on the 15th of August, 2025, and will close on the 5th of September. Applications can be made online via the official government grants portal, or one can apply in person at any of the local Department of Social Development offices. Officials recommend that applications go in early so that there are no last-minute rushes or technical delays. Upon closing on the application date, applicants who got approved would have the payment lodged inside their bank accounts within 30 days.

Why This Matters

Youth unemployment in South Africa is still among the higher ones in the world. According to recent data, there are more than four million youth unemployed, many of whom cannot afford transport to interviews, internet for job searches, or training.

Minister Nkosi asserted, “This is not just about giving money. It is about giving young people a fighting chance to participate in the economy.”
